Danny Shirley was born on October 7, 1959 while his parents had gone up from Tampa, Florida to Rockford, Illinois to visit family members. He’s been living his life the same way he entered it, on his own terms.

He was raised in the areas of Tampa, Jacksonville, and Gainesville, Florida. He began his training in Judo after he received his first Black Belt. he then trained in the Philippine Martial Arts. Always in constant strife for perfection

When Danny was 18 he moved to Brilliant, Alabama and began working in Hamilton, Alabama where he met and later married his wife of 29 years, Jeanie.

At 19 he trained in Nusn Karate for 2 years, then went into American Karate. While training in American Karate he also trained in Ninjitsu. On April 4, 1989 at the age of 29, he received his Black Belt in American Karate at the Reed School of Martial Arts. Four months later on August 3 he received the rank of Third Degree Black Belt at the Callaway Ninjitsu Academy.

Danny’s passion for Jeet Kune Do began after attending a seminar instructed by Sifu: Jerry Poteet. He then trained with Sifu: Lamar Davis until receiving his Apprentice Instructor certificate on August 5, 1990. Afterwards he trained with the man responsible for the new fire in his soul—Jeet Kune Do Sifu: Jerry Poteet. After being one of the chosen few to inherit the real J.K.D.and train in private with Sifu:Poteet.

Danny’s training and skill building did not end there however; training with several of the legendary Bruce Lee’s students as well as many second-generation instructors.

Among his many achievements already mentioned, he has also been an active Kick Boxer on the PKA and ISKA circuit and several other Karate circuits. He has also been a Private Investigator as well as a Bounty Hunter for several different Bail Bondsmen.

Danny continues to train and improve his skills while teaching the art and science of Jeet Kune Do. He has dedicated his life to the Martial Arts and in helping others improve their skills in these areas. He believes that the highest honor any instructor could receive is seeing their students improve not only their knowledge and skills in all forms of the Martial Arts, but in their personal lives as well! With his knowledge, skills, and love of Jeet Kune Do, his passion is contagious.

Danny Shirley is currently the President and CEO of Dragon Tough Inc./129 Sports Center and Senior Instructor of Dragon Tough Martial Arts Academy and promoter of Tough Man competitions, MMA competition, and the all-new full contact Stand-up contest in Haleyville, Alabama; where he also offers Women’s Self-Defense courses. Danny lives in Haleyville, Alabama with his wife and two children.
